From local folklore we are told that there once was a city where Carlingford Lough is now – the beautiful Cahir Linn. The sunken city was supposedly located near Carlingford in Co. Louth overlooked by Slieve Foy, the mountain which was once an active volcano.

Officially unveiled by the owners of Killeavy Castle Estate, Sydney-based businessman Mick Boyle and his wife Robin, Killeavy Castle Estate has just launched an Estate Farm Store and Estate Gardens following a further £500,000 investment. 

The Vikings first came to Ireland as raiders but began to settle here by the ninth century. In the south of the country they founded the towns of Dublin, Waterford, Wexford, Cork and Limerick.

Archaeologists have found evidence for these southern towns, but no traces of settlements, and relatively few Viking objects, in the north of Ireland. However, the name ‘Strangford’ is a Viking word, referring to the strong currents in the Narrows of the Lough.

The fresh daffodils and colourful crocuses are finally flowering, the tiny lambs are frolicking in our fields and it’s beginning to feel a lot more like Spring is finally in the air. The spiritual centre of our area, Downpatrick is a beautiful and historic town built on the rolling drumlins of Lecale. One of the oldest towns on the island of Ireland, it has a long association with Saint Patrick who spent much of his time in and around the area and died here in the early 5th Century. His legacy remains and whether you come here on pilgrimage or just to simply say hello, there is a unique atmosphere in this small town that you won’t find anywhere else.

It’s all about the sea around Strangford and Lecale. An area of outstanding natural beauty, stunning views and of special scientific interest, this part of the world is a real winner for those who like their life outdoors.
