Heritage and Local Stories
Crossgar takes its name from the Irish An Chrois Ghearr, meaning "the short cross". The name is believed to be linked to an ecclesiastical cross associated with the area, although no trace of the original cross remains today. Nearby, St Mary's Well (Tobar Mhuire) reflects the village's long religious heritage and remains an important local landmark.
Visitors can explore the Tobar Mhuire Heritage Trail, a waymarked walk through 55 acres of woodland featuring the historic holy well, a Victorian walled garden and panoramic views across County Down towards the Mourne Mountains.
Crossgar is also home to the James Martin Memorial Stone in the village square. Martin, who was born locally, invented the aircraft ejector seat and co-founded the Martin-Baker Aircraft Company, making him one of County Down's most notable innovators.
