The Ring of Gullion Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is a remarkable geological landscape unlike any other in Ireland or the UK. It was the first ring dyke in the world to be geologically mapped, making it a place of international significance. A ring of rugged hills surrounds the heather-clad Slieve Gullion, creating a dramatic natural rampart above a patchwork of fields, forest, heath and bog. This dramatic and thriving landscape is where people live and work every day, acting as a catalyst for vibrant community tourism with the potential to develop a sustainable future for the region through this world-class tourism designation.- The Mourne Gullion Strangford Geopark has over 400 million years of geological history. It charts the closure of the Iapetus Ocean and the bringing together of the two parts of what we now know as the island of Ireland, its passage through tropical latitudes, the birth of the North Atlantic Ocean, and finally the shaping of landscape by ice during the last glaciation.
There are a number of well-established walking routes and trails throughout the Mourne Gullion Strangford Geopark. These include the Mourne Way, Ring of Gullion Way, Lecale Way and the Mourne Coastal Route.- Mourne Gullion Strangford Geopark takes in the breathtaking beauty of the Ring of Gullion, Mourne Mountains and Strangford & Lecale.
