Spa owes its origins as a place of resort to the discovery of a mineral spring in the late seventeenth century, an event which gradually established the district as a modest centre of therapeutic visitation.
In 1810, David Ker of the Montalto estate installed two pumps to regulate access to the waters, and his son later enhanced the amenities with the erection of the Assembly Rooms in 1840, a distinguished building incorporating a ballroom and serving as the social focus of the settlement. A hotel, ornamental maze, and associated facilities were subsequently developed to accommodate the increasing number of visitors who travelled by rail to Ballynahinch before completing their journey to Spa by jaunting car. Although the wells and hotel remained in use into the 1920s, the resort declined thereafter, and the complex ultimately closed during the later twentieth century.
The Assembly Rooms is now the home of Spa Masonic Lodge.
