Newry Canal Way Walk & Cycle Trail – A Scenic Journey from Newry to Poyntzpass

Looking for an easy, scenic adventure in Mourne Gullion Strangford? The Newry Canal Way is one of Northern Ireland’s most relaxing walking and cycling routes, perfect for families, casual walkers and keen cyclists alike.

Starting in Newry City, this beautiful stretch of the Newry Canal Way follows a historic towpath towards Poyntzpass, offering a peaceful escape into nature with plenty of stories along the way. Part of the National Cycle Network Route 9, the trail is flat and accessible, making it ideal for all abilities.

Step Into History Along the Canal

As you set off, you’ll be walking alongside one of the oldest canals in Britain, dating back to 1742. Once used by horses pulling canal boats (known as “lighters”), today the towpath offers a tranquil route where history meets nature.

The canal winds gently through the countryside, with the water on one side and glimpses of the River Cusher and railway line on the other. Keep an eye out for fascinating heritage features including:

  • Historic stone lock gates and restored sections of the canal
  • The charming Blacksmith’s Cottage
  • The impressive Terryhoogan Aqueduct
  • Remnants of old canal basins once busy with trade

Nature, Wildlife & Peaceful Landscapes

This route isn’t just rich in history, it’s also a haven for wildlife. As you continue towards Poyntzpass, you’ll pass Acton Lake (Lough Shark), a peaceful spot perfect for birdwatching and enjoying the natural surroundings.

  • Native birdlife and aquatic species
  • Lush greenery and wildflowers
  • Quiet countryside views that change with the seasons
