About

This conference will discuss the actions and motivations of the lower and middle ranks rather than the leadership and military action of the rebels, to get a new perspective on the events of the 1798 United Irishmen rebellion

Speakers are from a variety of backgrounds including leading academics, historians and members of the local community.

The conference will begin on Thursday 10th September in Bangor Castle, featuring presentations from Professor Andrew Holmes, Dr Jennifer Orr, and local historians Alison Murphy, Brian White and the Killinchy history detectives.

On Friday, Down County Museum in Downpatrick will host the second day of the conference. Speakers will include 1798 scholars Ken Dawson and Linda McKenna, Professor Brian Walker, Dr Johnathan Wright and historian Trevor Martin.

Both days of the conference will include a 1798 themed tour guided by staff of North Down Museum and Down County Museum.
