Down Cathedral & St Patrick's Grave EHOD 2026

About

You will receive a warm welcome when you visit Down Cathedral, beautifully set on the Hill of Down beside St Patrick’s traditional burial place. Our short guided tours share the rich history connected with St Patrick and the site’s origins as a Benedictine Monastery founded by John de Courcy in 1183 and dedicated to the saint. Inside, visitors can enjoy many fine features, including superb stained glass windows, Georgian box pews, and a magnificent pipe organ.

For EHOD 2026, and in keeping with the Heritage at Risk theme, we will offer specialist tours focusing on the cathedral’s stained glass windows. These tours invite visitors to reimagine this historic craft, explore the stories behind the glass, and understand the care required to preserve such fragile heritage for future generations. We will also offer a children’s drop in art activity, encouraging young visitors to reimagine the stained glass windows through their own creative designs.

Down Cathedral remains first and foremost a place of worship and prayer, and you are warmly invited to join us.
