About

Relax at the Flax!

Offering peaceful luxury in the heart of County Down, Newcastle and Downpatrick are close by with Belfast 30 min and Dublin 90 min drive. The Flax House sleeps up to 6 - all en suite (double or twin).

The Flax House is part of a largely complete small scale vernacular Georgian rural milling complex dating back to the 18th Century.

Marybrook includes a Corn Mill, Flax (Scutch) Mill, a Forge and a hem-stitching building variously dating back to late 1700s - early 1800s.

Situated on the Ballynahinch river which runs right past the Flax House,  the adjacent Flax Mill is powered by a recently restored breast-shot water wheel.

The Flax House has also a been lovingly restored, with much care taken to maintaining its unique character. A stay here is truly an escape into Irish history.

In 2019 the present owners - your hosts- were awarded a Heritage Angel Award for the best maintenance of a private listed building.

The Flax House dates from the late 1700's. It has an open plan living room, dining and kitchen. Upstairs has 3 bedrooms which are all en suite.

The Flax House sits on the river bank and here you can relax in nature surrounded by mature trees and rural countryside.

The outdoor area has a dining space, covered veranda and fire pit area - and that all important river sight & sound to enjoy on tranquil evenings.

The adjacent paddock is likely to have sheep and lambs during the spring and summer months. Our friendly collie dog (Lassie) may call by to visit you!

There is plenty of car parking. No need for white lines. No tickets, no Apps, no restrictions, no fees. Just park up where suits…..

We are close to many local wedding venues, including Montalto; Larchfield; Dufferin Inn; Tullyverry House; Finnebrogue.

Newcastle and Downpatrick are close by with Belfast 30 min and Dublin 90 min drive.
