Join architectural historian Gerry Ward for a talk exploring the brief yet prolific career of Victorian architect William Joseph Barre (1830-1867).
Barre was born in Newry, where he initially focused on local projects, including Hill Street Unitarian Church and Riverside Presbyterian Church. He moved to Belfast and won prestigious assignments to design and build the Albert Memorial Clock Tower and the Ulster Hall. Barre was recognised as one of the most renowned architects of his day, gaining a position as a Council Member on the Board of the Royal Institute of Architects of Ireland, before passing away at the age of just 37.
Gerry is an architectural historian with a particular interest in the architects who built Belfast and beyond. He has written extensively, and has had articles published, on the Fitzpatrick Brothers, Brumwell Thomas, Young & MacKenzie, WJ Barre and Sir Charles Lanyon.
He is a former Chairperson and current Vice-Chair of the West Belfast Historical Society and is a member of the Ulster Architectural Heritage Society.
