About
Featuring Damian Gorman
This special screening brings together powerful documentary works reflecting on life during the conflict, created by some of Northern Ireland's most significant poetic voices.
At the heart of the programme is Devices of Detachment (30 mins), Damian Gorman's acclaimed verse documentary first broadcast on BBC2 in 1992. Described by critic Sean Day-Lewis as "a television masterpiece", the film explores the role of the bystander during the Troubles, pairing Gorman's poetic narration with stark archival footage. Selected for INPUT as one of the twelve best public service television programmes of its year and screened internationally, this marks its first screening in Northern Ireland since 2013.
The programme also includes Something to Write Home About: A Tribute to Seamus Heaney (30 mins), created by Heaney and his collaborator David Hammond in 1998. The film revisits Heaney's home ground in Castledawson, reflecting on landscape, identity and the possibility of understanding across divisions.
Damian Gorman, whose work spans poetry, film and theatre of social conscience including the BAFTA-winning drama United and the recent critically acclaimed B O Y, will introduce the screening.
Programmed by Second Chance Cinema.
