The Whitewater Loop begins in the bustling fishing port of Kilkeel and winds its way inland to Whitewater Bridge. Named after the Whitewater River, which flows from the Mourne Mountains to Mill Bay, this is the shortest of the scenic Mourne Coastal Scenic loops, perfect for a relaxed drive packed with stunning views and local heritage.
Travelling through genuine Mourne farming country, you’ll gain insight into how the region’s twin industries, agriculture and fishing, have shaped community life for generations. The route brings you close to Silent Valley Mountain Park, the Mournes’ most-visited site. Here, excellent facilities, peaceful walking trails, and magnificent views of the Silent Valley and Ben Crom reservoirs make it an ideal place to stop and stretch your legs. During the 1920s dam construction, an entire temporary town called Watertown stood here, complete with its own cinema and hospital!
Explore the Whitewater Loop: From Kilkeel’s Coast to the Heart of the Mournes
A natural midway stop is Attical, the highest village in the Mournes. It’s perfectly placed for a comfort break before you continue towards spectacular views of Slieve Binnian. Standing at 747m, Binnian is the Mournes’ third-highest peak, crowned by dramatic rocky tors that resemble horns—easy to spot on a clear day.
As you approach Whitewater Bridge, look out for Mourne Wood on your left and Rocky Mountain on your right. Nearby sits Mourne Park House, once home to the Earls of Kilmorey and famously visited by King Edward VII.
The loop concludes as you rejoin the Mourne Coastal Route, giving you the option to continue your scenic journey along Carlingford Lough towards the charming village of Rostrevor.
