Slieve Roosley Scenic Loop

This circular scenic loop of the Mourne Coastal Route begins and ends in Rostrevor, taking visitors through forest landscapes and on to Hilltown before returning via the foothills of the Mournes.

Highlights along the Slieve Roosley Scenic Loop of the Mourne Coastal Route

• Rostrevor & Kilbroney Park

Before or after completing the loop, visitors can explore Kilbroney Park, a popular destination offering activities for all ages. 

• Oakwood National Nature Reserve

The route passes through a more densely forested landscape, including Oakwood National Nature Reserve, which overlooks Carlingford Lough. The reserve contains rare native oak woodland that is at least 250 years old and provides excellent birdwatching opportunities.

• Leitrim Lodge & Hen Mountain

Leitrim Lodge and nearby Hen Mountain provide ideal picnic locations and access to walking trails. Visitors are encouraged to bring a picnic and enjoy the surrounding scenery. 

• Hilltown

Hilltown is described as a friendly market village and was once an important location on a historic smuggling route. During the 18th and 19th centuries, smugglers transported goods from the coast near Newcastle through the Mournes via the Brandy Pad, with Hilltown serving as their destination. Today the village remains well served by local pubs and hospitality venues. 

• Murphy's Fort

Beyond Hilltown lies an ancient stone circle known locally as Murphy's Fort. The site consists of five standing stones, and archaeological excavations suggest it dates from the late Bronze Age. 

Slieve Roosley Scenic Loop | Return Journey

The final section of the scenic loop returns visitors through the foothills of the Mourne Mountains to Rostrevor. From there, travellers can rejoin the Mourne Coastal Route and continue towards Warrenpoint and Newry City.
