About
A candid portrait of a literary sensation that's as enchanting as O'Brien's wonderful novels.
Blue Road is a powerful portrait of one of Ireland's most celebrated and controversial writers, Edna
O'Brien, whose fearless voice reshaped Irish literature and challenged social convention.
After the publication of The Country Girls in 1960 — a novel that became a sensation but was
banned and burned in Ireland, O'Brien built a remarkable international career defined by honesty
and resilience. Directed by Sinéad O'Shea, the film features O'Brien's final reflections, recorded in
her 93rd year, alongside excerpts from her journals read by Jessie Buckley, with contributions from
Gabriel Byrne and others.
An intimate and moving tribute to a writer who changed Ireland's cultural landscape.
